About Tricky Fish

Great food, fresh ingredients, simply prepared...any more than that and things get complicated. Tricky Fish, the idea for it anyway, was born along Chinquapin Reef in East Matagorda Bay. And on the water off Port A and near the barrier islands south of Cocodrie, LA. Days spent on the water and evenings spent with good friends, a cold beer and amazing food. Eating out should be a break from the real world. It should be fun, relaxing, a chance to get away from all the things that make our lives… well, complicated. A good meal, spending time with family and friends, trying a local craft beer or glass of wine on the patio - that’s what Tricky Fish is all about.

Because simple is better.

I went in on a Tuesday at around 530. As I entered, I was given a menu and a booth to sit in. I sat there for about 10 minutes before I asked the hostess if this was self service or waiter service. I asked because I saw a fountain drink machine in the dining area and what looked liked ordering kiosks by the kitchen. She told me that at this hour it is full service. When returning to my seat, the bartender said he would be with me in a moment. After another 5 minutes he came over and I just gave him my drink, food and side order. I had the fish and chips with a side of Mac & Cheese with a Dr. Pepper. He brought the Dr. Pepper back and it was 90% ice. After a few small sips, the drink was empty. When my food arrived, it looked delicious. I asked the person who brought my food if they could refill my drink and she did happily. The food was all very delicious! The fish was a beer batter where you could actually taste a bit of beer. There wasn't too much better and it wasn't dripping in oil. A+ for sure! The fries had a nice seasoning on them and the coleslaw looked like it was freshly made. The Mac & Cheese was not too dry, not too watery. While eating my food, there were no additional offers to refill the drink so I had to take it upon myself to refill. Nobody came by to ask how my food was, just a bus boy to take away my tray. Once my tray was gone, I waited another TWENTY minutes for the bartender to ask if I wanted a check. The food was great, the service was slower than a snail. Maybe consider self service full time if there isn't enough staff to accommodate. If they're able to get some wait staff or someone is going for lunch, I would recommend them to everyone.

We have eaten here a couple of times. My favorite visit was for brunch though. We both got dishes that were amazing. Beautiful balance of flavors and ingredients. We also got the Mimosa bar where you can choose your flavors as you go, which is awesome. This is definitely one of my top brunch spots now.

Went for happy hour and had some incredible $1 oysters. So good that they didn't even need the horseradish, mignonette, marinara, or lemon (although I did put these on some to try). I also appreciate that they serve cold white wine in CHILLED glasses *chefs kiss*... Bartender was friendly and attentive :)

When my partner and I want to treat ourselves to some seafood this is the first place that comes to mind. From the Mac n cheese to the fried shrimp and even the salads, this place is so good! Highly recommend! Even the cocktails are delicious! Can’t go wrong with this place!
